Reds in hunt for Socceroo
By VAL MIGLIACCIO
03may06

SOCCEROO Stan Lazaridis is heading to Adelaide for potential talks with Adelaide United on Friday week.

Lazaridis will leave his English Premier League club Birmingham on Tuesday and first fly directly to his hometown of Perth.

The ball now appears to be in United's court with coach John Kosmina expected to table the ex-West Adelaide talisman an offer.

United chief executive Michael Petrillo revealed, however, the club was not in a rush for new players.

"We're still a way off before we make a decision," Petrillo said.

"Lazaridis is on the list but how far we go with it depends on Kossie."

Lazaridis, 33, has been included in the Socceroos squad for the match against Greece on May 25.

After more than a decade in England he's keen to settle in Adelaide. Lazaridis has a business partnership with his brother-in-law Sam Klementou at a Glenelg restaurant but is reportedly building a multi-million dollar mansion in Perth.

United cannot afford to drag its feet with Perth Glory, Newcastle Jets, New Zealand Knights, England's Crystal Palace and a club from the United Arab Emirates all lurking for Lazaridis' signature.

Birmingham was relegated at the weekend following a 0-0 draw with Newcastle on Saturday.

Lazaridis will be a free player on June 30.

His contract has an "out" clause because he has played less than 50 per cent of Birmingham's premiership matches. The gun left-sided midfielder has played in 17 out of 37 premiership matches this season.

United is also seemingly coy about signing World Cup-bound Socceroo Tony Vidmar.

Sydney FC has apparently shown some interest in Vidmar.

Petrillo was adamant the club was in no rush to snare any player.

"We've probably looked at eight to 10 players over the past few weeks," he said.

"I think we'll be closer to making a decision around World Cup time."

Meanwhile Uruguayan striker Santiago Martin "Tanque" Silva has attracted the Reds' attention.

Silva, at 186cm, is currently playing for Uruguay's Central Espanol and has scored three goals in six matches.

Silva, 25, played for Argentina's Newells Old Boys, River Plate (Uruguay), Corinthians (Brazil), Cottbus (Germany) and Italy's Chievo Verona.

Hey Stan, hopefully you read these pages, if this rumour turns out to be true. How about you get on-line from Oz and keep in touch.

Personally I feel very sorry that we have ended your time with us on a low. You have been an outstanding servant for this club and West Ham must have been totally off their rockers to let you go.

My dear lady will miss bumoing into you at Sainsbury's. You are her favourite Blues player by a long chanlk. I'm not sure I can break this news to her. lol.

I really would like you to keep in touch. You can give i=us some good advice on teh internal working of the modeern club and everything else once the restrictions on chat have been taken off.

Anyway. Going to far for now. But wanted to get my message in just in case things move very quickly.

Don't forget us. We will not forget you.
